It's much easier to promote or market sport when the English team have just won a huge competition. Look at the interest that rugby got on the back of the World Cup in 2003 and again in 2007. Similarly with the Ashes in 2005. Loads of people wanted to be the next Jonny Wilkinson or Freddie Flintoff.
